Working with drones

Later this week, I will start a new research partnership with Prof. Karthik Dantu of the University at Buffalo. Together, we will experiment with drones, Lidar, and GPR sensors at the site of Podere Cannicci to find new solutions for archaeology.

The team

This side project of IMPERO is carried out by Prof. Alessandro Sebastiani, Prof. Karthik Dantu, and Prof. Luca Mottola, assisted by Yash Turkar (UB -SUNY), Cleo Barbafiera, Dr. Alessandro Carabia (University of Birmingham), Marta De Pari (University of Bari – La Sapienza) and Dr. Edoardo Vanni (Università per Stranieri, Siena).

What inspired us?

Technology is fast developing. The idea behind the project is to provide new remote sensing tools and apply them to field archaeology. GPR and Lidar sensors mounted on drones can easily reduce the time and costs of geophysical surveys and provide data to strategize the subsequent excavation.
