Podere Cannicci

Podere Cannicci stands as an emblematic archaeological site nestled within the prestigious Monteverdi Estate, owned by the Giannuzzi Savelli family.

Its accidental unearthing in 1989 amid the installation of a gas pipeline marked the commencement of its archaeological exploration, a journey that gained momentum in 2017.

As excavations expanded, the site unveiled a tapestry of structures, each with distinct purposes, tracing back their origins to the 3rd century BC. Remarkably, the fire that ravaged the settlement in the early 1st century BC bestowed upon it an unparalleled state of preservation, allowing scholars invaluable insights into its evolution.

Podere Cannicci serves as a testament to the Roman conquest of this part of Etruria and encapsulates the tumultuous epochs of the Hellenistic era and the abrupt abandonment triggered by Sulla’s reprisals.
